At Pila in Val d’Aosta in Italy you need to get seriously ready to benefit from the total “ski in the Sky” skiing experience. Pila is located up in a small quiet village just a 25-minute gondola’s ride up above Aosta itself. As the gondola ride is spectacular enough in itself, and Aosta offers cheaper accommodation and more nightlife and amenities, we’ve included our interactive hotel maps of both Pila and Aosta.
Pila is inside a bowl that enjoys a 360-degree view of the major alpine peaks – a birds-eye view of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Monterosa massif up to the Grand Combin. If you’re a hardcore skier or snowboarder and in the car or don’t mind using trains and buses, why not combine a week at Pila with a second week in Chamonix, Courmayeur (Mont Blanc) or one of the Monterosa resorts such as Gressoney. Monterosa is the second-highest massif in Europe after Mont Blanc itself.
For those interest in its history, Pila was once known as Pilaz which back then had a silent “z”. Until quite recently in the 1960s, the Pila bowl until was home to rich mountainside grazing pastures for the production of milk and dairy products.
Today though, Pila is a modern and famous skiing resort attracting skiers and snowboarders from all over Italy and from all over Europe. It boasts some 70 km of slopes of excellent quality, some great wide pistes and tremendous off-piste skiing and boarding both within the trees and up above the treeline. The resort is always immaculate and well cared for and deserves a special mention for its welcome and friendliness towards families with young children.
For snowboarders at Pila, you can find the segregated “AreaF snowpark” where there is an assortment of boxes, jumps, kickers and rails to give snowboarders fun in absolute freedom and safety. The snowpark also usually has a sound system, will brighten up your jibbing experience!
